DWF Member Katy Gray Reviews Lowel GL1 Light

Katy Gray, our own lucky DWF member, had the opportunity to work with Lowel Light and review one of their products on location. Katy is a wedding photographer based out of Jacksonhole, WY and shoots all sorts of awesome, funky weddings in beautiful locations. Read her review of how the Lowel Light handled on location at one of her shoots:

“I was lucky enough to get a review model of the Lowel GL1 to test at my last few weddings of the year. When the box arrived I ran right upstairs to grab it off the porch and stopped short – was this giant box really home to a portable LED? Upon opening it I realized that yes, yes it was.

First impressions – this thing is big. Like…the size of a fairly large cordless drill big. It comes with a snoot/hood built in to help focus your light or spread it out, depending on your preference. It also has a dimmer dial built in near the power button. It took me a minute to figure out how to charge it, but that might just be five years of sleep deprivation at work (I’ve got kids).

Once it was charged I packed it up and headed out to my last big wedding of the year – I was very much looking forward to trying some backlit night time shots and using it to illuminate some details.

As I was wrangling it out of my lighting bag, I realized one thing that was going to make it tough – I couldn’t hold the light AND the camera at the same time. It does come with a tripod socket on the bottom, but of course I wasn’t prepared for that. Thankfully my trusty assistant was there to act as Voice Activated Light Stand, so that worked out just fine.

I love this light for details. It lit up the cake table to perfection and spotlighted the rings beautifully. Where I had trouble was with my night shots – I did not think of the fact that the camera couldn’t focus on a pitch black subject. This is of course not a problem with the Lowel, but a lack of foresight on my part. I did manage to get one that I liked, but it would have gone a lot better if I had thought to bring a flashlight or something to help me lock focus.

In conclusion, the Lowel GL1 is a great light that does exactly what it’s supposed to – light stuff up. It’s a bit on the bulky and large side for me, but if you’re used to working with a tripod or if you have an assistant that would not be an issue. The hood worked perfectly for the ring shots and the spread was great for lighting up the cake table. It had plenty of power to backlight the couple in the near-complete darkness, and also worked well as a spotlight. If you’re looking for a handheld LED with plenty of power and light output options, the Lowel GL1 is a great choice. If you’re looking for something a bit smaller that is easier to handle as a one man show, I’d recommend looking a little farther for it.”
